This earthenware fruit bowl is handmade in Indonesia.
It's large enough to hold lots of fruit but can also be used for displaying dry decoration, such as pinecones.
Made in Lombok, Indonesia, by potters working with fair trade co-operative, Lombok Pottery Centre, using the same skills that have been used for centuries to make pottery for everyday village life - both for cooking and ceremonial usage, resulting in products that are beautiful, sturdy and practical.
Lombok earthenware pottery has evolved over the centuries and generations, with skills passed down from mother to daughter. The pottery has always served a practical as well as ceremonial use, hence their beautiful presentation.
Lombok Pottery products are hand-formed from red earthenware clay. They are burnished with a hard object to smoothen and polish. Following the firing process the pottery is skilfully pulled out while still hot using iron tongs. It is then immediately sprayed with natural tamarind extract, which fuses with the hot clay to produce the beautiful reddish-brown speckled finish.
As they are hand-formed and coloured no two items are the same and variations in the size, colour and finish may occur.
Kartimarket has had a long term partnership with the Lombok Pottery Centre for a number of years - we visit them to hand-pick products and collaborate in the design of new ones. The products are imported directly to the UK.
